Quick Guide: Opening, Inspecting, and Measuring Models in KeyCreator Viewer
KeyCreator Viewer is a lightweight CAD viewer for inspecting 2D and 3D models without the need for the full KeyCreator authoring application. This guide walks through opening files, basic inspection tools, and measuring geometry so you can quickly validate designs, check dimensions, and communicate issues.
Supported file types
- Native KeyCreator files (.ckd, .mfg)
- Common CAD interchange formats (.step/.stp, .iges/.igs, .sat, .x_t)
- 2D formats (DXF, DWG)
- Neutral and polygon formats (OBJ, STL) If a format isn’t listed, try exporting from the originating CAD system to STEP or IGES for best compatibility.
Opening files
- Launch KeyCreator Viewer.
- Click File > Open (or press Ctrl+O).
- In the Open dialog, select the file type filter matching your file, navigate to the file, and click Open.
- If import options appear (units, scale, repair), accept sensible defaults:
- Units: match the source file if known; otherwise use millimeters for mechanical parts.
- Scale: 1.0 unless you know the model uses nonstandard units.
- Repair: enable automatic healing for small geometry issues on STEP/IGES imports.
Navigation basics
- Rotate: Click-and-drag with the left mouse button (or use the rotate tool).
- Pan: Middle mouse button drag (or Shift + left button).
- Zoom: Mouse wheel or right button drag up/down.
- Fit view: Double-click the middle mouse button or use View > Fit to Window.
View controls and display modes
- Shaded, wireframe, hidden-line, and shaded-with-edges are common display modes — switch using the View toolbar.
- Toggle component or layer visibility from the Assembly/Layer panel to isolate parts.
- Use sectioning/clip planes to inspect internal features (View > Section).
Inspecting geometry and attributes
- Entity selection: Click edges, faces, or vertices to highlight. Use box selection for groups.
- Properties panel: With an entity selected, open Properties to see material, color, name, and metadata imported with the model.
- Tree/Browser: Use the model tree to find components, suppress/hide items, and locate named features.
Measuring tools
KeyCreator Viewer provides precise measurement tools for verification.
-
Linear measurement
- Tool: Measure > Distance or press the Measure icon.
- Procedure: Click two points (vertices, edge endpoints, or face centers). The exact distance displays in the Measurement dialog with units.
-
Edge/curve length
- Tool: Measure > Curve Length.
- Procedure: Select an edge or chain of edges to get total length.
-
Angle measurement
- Tool: Measure > Angle.
- Procedure: Select two edges or faces; the included angle displays in degrees.
-
Radius/diameter
- Tool: Measure > Radius or Diameter.
- Procedure: Click a circular edge or arc; the tool reports radius and diameter.
-
Coordinate readout
- Tool: Measure > Coordinate or use pointer readout.
- Procedure: Click any point to get its XYZ coordinates relative to the model origin. Use the origin reset or change the coordinate system if needed.
-
Area and volume
- Tool: Measure > Area / Measure > Volume (if available).
- Procedure: Select faces or bodies to compute surface area or enclosed volume. For meshes (STL/OBJ), ensure closed watertight geometry for accurate volume.
-
Snap and reference options
- Enable endpoint, midpoint, center, tangent snaps for precise picks.
- Use temporary construction lines or datum points if needed.
Best practices for accurate measurements
- Confirm units immediately after opening; convert if necessary.
- Use model origin and coordinate system consistent with the design intent.
- For imported geometry, run a quick repair or heal operation to fix small gaps before volume/area measurements.
- When measuring on tessellated formats (STL/OBJ), increase mesh resolution in the export step of the source CAD for better accuracy.
Exporting measurement results and screenshots
- Copy numeric measurement readouts from the Measurement dialog and paste into reports.
- Use View > Capture Screen or File > Export > Image to save screenshots (PNG preferred).
- For markups, use annotation tools to place dimensions and notes, then export the annotated view as an image or PDF.
Troubleshooting common issues
- Model won’t open: Export to STEP/IGES from the source CAD and try again.
- Measurements inconsistent: Check units, scale factor, and whether the model is tessellated.
- Missing faces or gaps: Run import repair or use a repair tool in the authoring CAD.
- Slow performance with large assemblies: Hide unused components, switch to wireframe, or open subset files.
Quick checklist before sharing findings
- Confirm units and coordinate system.
- Perform key measurements with snapping enabled.
- Capture at least two screenshots (overall and close-up of the measured features).
- Export measurements and annotate images with the measurement values and tolerances.
- Note file format used and any import/repair actions taken.
This quick guide should let you open, inspect, and measure most models in KeyCreator Viewer reliably. If you need steps for a specific file type or to automate repeated measurements, specify the file format and task and I’ll provide a focused procedure.
